With modern technology, patients are able to achieve better results with hair transplantation. Prior to a hair transplant surgery, surgeons will have to evaluate the number of grafts required for each case. Many hair transplant surgeons around the world put emphasis on the micrografting technique. But what is micrograft and why is it beneficial for the patients?
Hair graft is actually hair follicle. Hair graft is a technical term frequently used in the hair transplantation context. One hair graft or one hair follicle may contain 1 to 5 hairs. Naturally on our scalp, there is a random distribution of hair follicles containing different number of hairs. Surgeons will assess the condition of the patient’s hair as well as evaluate the number of grafts required for the area of concern. Each patient would require different number of grafts depending on their particular needs.
The next question that crosses most patients’ minds is ‘where do we take the hair grafts from?’. To simply put it, not only can we use hair graft from other areas aside from our scalp, we can also use hair from other area of the body, such as, the hair from the chest, legs, moustache, beard, and armpits. When hair grafts are taken from other areas that is not the scalp, it is called Body Hair Transplantation. However, most surgeons would recommend taking hair grafts from the back of your head (also known as ‘the permanent zone’). This would give the longest-lasting results as well as the most natural appearance.
Micrografting is an advanced technique where excess fats and skin tissue around the hair grafts are removed under a microscope while the hair grafts remain intact. This technique will slim down the size of hair grafts (micrografts) , allowing surgeons to be able to implant more hair grafts in a given area. Hence, A higher hair transplant density can be achieved. Also, the micrografting technique provides a more aesthetically pleasing result.
