Learn How to Grow Your Hair Faster

Everyone wants to have a head of full, lustrous hair. People who have experienced some hair loss for a specific medical reason often wish they could increase the speed of their hair growth once their hair starts growing again. But did you know that your hair cycles through four phases, and these can determine how fast your hair grows? The four phases are called:

  • Anagen phase (growing phase)
  • Catagen phase (transition phase)
  • Telogen phase (resting phase)
  • Exogen phase (shedding phase)

The first three phases cover the lifespan of the individual hairs. The exogen, or shedding phase, involves shedding old hairs in preparation for the cycle to begin again.

Timelines of the Phases

Each phase has a unique timeline, with the anagen phase lasting the longest.

Anagen Phase

The anagen phase for the hairs on your head lasts, on average, between 3 to 5 years, and it can continue for up to 7 years. Although these phases govern hair growth all over your body, the anagen phase differs significantly depending on the type of hair. For instance, the anagen phase for eyebrows is much shorter, which is why our eyebrow hairs remain manageable.

Catagen Phase

The catagen phase lasts for about 10 days. The hair follicles shrink, and growth slows. As the hair follicles shrink, they separate from the bottom of the follicle, yet growth can still occur.

Telogen Phase

The telogen phase lasts around three months. About 10 to 15 percent of the hairs on your scalp are in this phase at any given time. Neither growth nor shedding occurs during the telogen phase. This phase is also when new hairs begin to form in the follicles of hairs released during the catagen phase during shrinkage.

Exogen Phase

People may recognize when they’ve entered the exogen phase. They may notice they’re losing around 50 to 100 hairs a day, which is normal. The exogen phase lasts from 2 to 5 months, and during this phase, new hairs grow in the follicles to replace the hairs that are shed.

Medical Conditions Can Affect Hair Growth

There are some internal factors and medical conditions that can affect hair growth, including:

  • Aging
  • Autoimmune conditions
  • Alopecia Areata
  • Anemia
  • Hormones
  • Bacterial infections
  • Some infectious diseases
  • Ringworm
  • Cancer treatments
  • Stress

If you’re worried about hair loss, you might consider having a complete physical examination to see if you’re dealing with any of the above factors. A dermatologist can tell you if a skin condition is affecting your hair loss.

If you simply want to learn how to grow hair faster, you might explore improving your diet to supply more of the nutrients required for hair growth.

How Can I Grow Hair Faster?

Hair growth is one of the first things to be sacrificed when your body needs additional nutrition to perform other functions. Eating a well-balanced diet with an adequate level of protein, 50 grams a day or more, can increase the speed of your hair growth.

Increasing some key nutrients that affect the hair structure and growth rate can also be beneficial. These nutrients include:

  • Iron
  • Zinc
  • Selenium
  • Folic acid
  • Vitamins A, D, and E
  • Fatty acids
  • Omega 3 and Omega 6

Some other treatments include using topical products with caffeine. Shampoos and conditioners with added caffeine may increase hair growth by stimulating the metabolism and the proliferation of skin cells. Essential oils may also help grow hair faster. These oils have antioxidant properties that may be effective at improving circulation in the scalp.

A scalp massage can also help to stimulate hair growth. It can increase circulation in the scalp by dilating blood vessels, which could lead to stronger and healthier hair that resists breaking. You can simply self-massage your scalp for a few minutes several times a day to see if you notice a difference.
