How to Wash Your Hair Correctly
If you notice that your hair is starting to fall out regularly, you may panic and try to figure out the cause. Many factors, including pattern baldness, illness, nutritional deficiencies and stress can cause hair loss.
However, it can also be caused by something you may have overlooked—how thoroughly and well you wash your hair. Washing your hair incorrectly or using harsh products can cause it to fall out.
We’re offering this tutorial on how to wash hair properly to help you ensure that your hair is being well taken care of and your daily hair-care routine doesn’t cause your hair loss.
Neglecting to wash your hair properly with the right hair care products can cause hair loss in a few ways.
We’ll describe how to properly wash your hair so you can be assured that your hair care routine isn’t contributing to your hair loss.
Most people only need to use gentle shampoos and conditioners to clean their hair. Gentle shampoos allow some of the natural moisture balance of your hair to remain.
Untangling your hair before washing it can relieve stress and prevent breakage. If your hair is severely tangled frequently, use a wide-toothed comb and “leave-in” conditioner to unsnarl your hair gently. Once it’s untangled, brush it out before washing.
The best temperature for washing hair is lukewarm. Water that’s too hot can damage hair, and shampoo and conditioner may not be as effective if the water is too cool.
Tilt your head from side to side to ensure that the underside of your hair is wet as well as the top. A removable shower head can be aimed to spray up from underneath your hair.
Pour about half a teaspoon of shampoo into your palms. Then, rub your hands together to spread it on both palms. Start rubbing the shampoo into your hair, starting at the roots and working out to the ends. As you work, gently massage the scalp to exfoliate the skin and stimulate blood circulation in the scalp.
Rinse thoroughly for about a minute or two to prevent soap residue from coating hairs or clogging pores. Use your fingers to comb through your hair as you rinse it.
Add conditioner using the same method you applied the shampoo. Use your fingers or a wide-toothed comb to ensure the conditioner fully coats your hair.
As you do the final rinse in lukewarm water, check the water and rinse it until it runs clear. Then, turn down the water temperature and finish rinsing in colder water. This helps seal the hair shafts and adds extra shine to your hair.
Use a microfiber to dry hair gently by wrapping it and blotting it a section at a time. Whenever possible, allow your hair to air-dry.
