    FAQs

    What causes hair loss?

    • There are various causes of hair loss and not all of them can be treated by hair transplantation. One of the main causes of hair loss that is treatable by hair transplantation is Androgenic Alopecia (AGA) or “Male-pattern Baldness” which occurs in both men and women between the ages of 25-65 years old. One in three men suffer from some form of hair loss before the age of 30 years old.
    • AGA is caused by a combination of environmental factors and inherited genes passed from your mother or father, thus it is frequently also found in other family members. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a naturally occurring hormone that is involved in hair loss. At high levels, DHT cause hair strands to become smaller (miniaturise), thinner, and eventually lost. The first areas to become affected include the frontal and crown area, then later the temple and occiput (back of the head). Without treatment, AGA will continue to progress and cause baldness and loss of confidence.
    • Hair transplant surgery is the process of restoring hair follicles to areas affected by hair loss that can give you years back on your appearance. Losing hair should no longer affect your confidence and be a concern any longer. At Bangkok Hair Clinic, we have not created the cure to hair loss but we have surely created a full head of hair for our male and female patients.

How do we design your new hair line?

Designing a hair line requires a refined understanding of beauty, art, and cosmetics. Our surgeons are experienced artists and they specialize in designing personal, natural hair lines based on each patient’s age, race, facial features and expectations. At Bangkok Hair Clinic, we aim to restore each patient’s youthful appearance or construct their dream hair line that would complement their appearance.

There are however limitations to designing each patient’s hair line and patients should discuss their ideas and desires with our surgeons.

I lose hair every day in the shower and combing, is that normal?

    • There are over 100,000 hairs on the average scalp and hair cycles between phases of rapid growth and phases of rest. On a normal head, approximately 100-150 hair follicles enter the resting phase and fall out every day. Most of these lost hairs will grow back in three to four months. This is not noticeable and you should not be concerned. However, if you find that the thickness of your hair is noticeably thinner, you should seek our professional help at the Bangkok Hair Clinic.
    • Hair grafts used in hair transplantation will go through the exact same cycle as that in normal hair.

What is the difference between FUT and FUE?

    • FUT and FUE both refer to two different processes of producing hair grafts from the donor area (usually the back of the head) to be used in hair transplantation surgery.
    • Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) or “Strip Surgery” is the original method of hair transplantation which involves excising a strip of hair-bearing scalp skin from the back of the head before dissecting the skin under a microscope to produce hair grafts for transplantation. After the strip is removed, the skin is sutured back together resulting in a fine, horizontal scar that is hardly noticeable.
    • Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) is an innovative method for harvesting hair grafts through directly excising each individual follicle from the donor area. In this process, small incisions are made and only small circular scars are left with no sutures necessary.
    • Both FUT and FUE techniques are excellent for extracting hair grafts but at the Bangkok Hair Clinic, we tailor the best technique to you and your needs.

    What is an Implanter pen?

    • Implanter pens are a specifically designed surgical instrument used in hair transplantation. It is used in the last phase of the procedure which is the implantation process. After your hair grafts have been harvested, they are gently placed into the tip of the implanter pen and inserted directly into the skin. This is sometimes referred to as ‘Direct Hair Implantation (DHI)’.
    • Our implanter pens are imported directly from Korea (Lion Implanter).
    • In standard FUE, metal forceps are used during implantation which causes more trauma to grafts. Implanter pens help improve the survival of hair grafts by 10-15% as it reduces the mechanical trauma done to grafts when compared to standard FUE. As more grafts survive, a more dense, natural hair line is created.

What is Direct Hair Implantation (DHI)?

    • Direct Hair Implantation or DHI is a name given to the use of Implanter pens during Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) hair transplant.
    • DHI hair transplant produces a more dense, natural hairline as implanter pens reduce the level of mechanical trauma grafts receive during the implantation process.

What is ‘First out, First in’ implantation?

    • One of the key factors during hair transplantation is the ‘out-of-body time’, which is the duration of time that grafts remain outside the body before being implanted in the recipient area. The shorter the out-of-body time, the greater the survival of grafts after transplantation.
    • At Bangkok Hair Clinic, we employ a standardised technique to minimise the out-of-body time of hair grafts, using specialised plates to organise grafts from the first ones removed to the last ones. This allows us to determine the first grafts that were removed from the donor area, and ensure they are the first to be implanted.
    • Our doctors have also researched and created a special mixture of imported graft holding solution for our procedures. This mixture can also be used to hold vital organs like the heart, lungs, or liver during organ transplantation. We are confident in our techniques and our patients are assured that their procedure at Bangkok Hair Clinic is optimised in all means possible.

Am I a good candidate for hair transplant surgery?

    • Most men and women with good general health are good candidates for hair transplantation. Our doctors at Bangkok Hair Clinic provide free consultation sessions to help accurately determine the degree of hair loss and hair type to confirm your candidacy and realistic results. During a consultation, we perform a thorough examination of your scalp by assessing the hair line, donor area density, scalp laxity, colour, texture, and other individual characteristics for hair restoration.
    • At our free consultation, we will help you visualise your new natural hair line

Can I design my own hairline?

    • At Bangkok Hair Clinic, we work very hard to deliver patients their best results. Our surgeons have a lot of experience designing hairlines that look natural according to age, race, and gender. More importantly, our surgeons understand how the hair grafts will look once they have grown. We enjoy working with our hair loss patients on the custom surgical plan and we always ask about your preference, but we may need to discuss further if your goals are cosmetically inappropriate.
    • Bangkok Hair Clinic specialises in creating natural looking hairlines. The best way to see what your hairline might look like is through a consultation with a professional from Bangkok Hair Clinic.

    Is hair transplantation painful?

    • Not only is this frequently asked, it is understandably a common fear among prospective transplant patients. At Bangkok Hair Clinic, we share your fear and our surgeons perfected a technique to administer anaesthesia very slowly to ensure your comfort. We believe hair transplantation can change your life and it shouldn’t be a painful start to it.

How thick will my transplanted hair be?

    • This is a difficult question to answer. “Density” is determined by the number of hairs per square centimeter, while “Volume” is determined by number of hairs, thickness of hairs, length, color, and curliness of hairs. The appearance of thickness or density will depend on how you style your hair, how much existing hair you have, how much hair you continue to lose, and how big the area is that you wish to transplant into.
    • Generally, hair restoration surgeons will aim for a density of 40-50 follicles per square centimeter which has been proved to be adequate for cosmetic appearance. Hair at the back of your head is always thicker than the front and this geometrically helps increase volume. Your surgeon at Bangkok Hair Clinic can help you understand these concepts.

How long do transplanted hairs last?

    • Transplanted hairs will continue to grow forever. This is because follicular units selected for harvesting are from the “permanent zone” of hair in the back and sides of the scalp. This hair is not affected by the hormone Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which causes miniaturisation of hair and eventual baldness. When these ‘protected’ follicular units are transplanted, they remain immune to DHT and grow as they would have within the donor area. This phenomenon is termed ‘donor dominance’ and though not entirely understood from a histochemical standpoint is the well established foundation for hair transplantation that is now time tested over nearly fifty years.

    Can someone donate his/her hair?

No. Hair transplantation can only be done on an “autologous” (same person) basis as rejection of cells will happen just like in heart or kidney transplant. Body Hair Transplant from different parts of your own body is possible and is offered at Bangkok Hair Clinic.

Are there any scars in hair transplantation surgery?

“There is no such thing as scarless surgery in hair transplantation” - International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery. False claims are often made about scarless surgery in our specialist field and although at Bangkok Hair Clinic we have perfected the techniques to minimise the appearance of scars, they exist.

Will I need a second procedure after my hair transplantation surgery?

    • This depends on the degree of hair loss and the density of the donor area. During one procedure, we can safely transplant 2500-3500 follicular units for some patients but these numbers will depend on the patient’s skin condition as well as their ability to tolerate surgery. The larger the number of hair grafts, the longer the procedure and research has shown that hair follicles do not tolerate time out of the body very well. If a patient requires a large number of grafts, we may recommend two procedures one year apart to allow the donor area to recover and replenish for optimal results.
    • Your hair surgeon at Bangkok Hair Clinic can help determine your needs and assess the number of procedures necessary for the best results.

What are the complications of hair transplant surgery?

    • With our techniques, hair transplant surgery is a very safe procedure with very low risk of complications. Infection of the transplanted area is virtually unheard of given the prescribed regimen of medication we provide our patients. There is a risk of adverse reaction to local anaesthesia which we always ask our transplant patients about and are trained to recognise and treat. Ingrown hairs can occur as the first hairs begin to emerge from the scalp but these will resolve completely. After surgery, some patients may experience numbness over the donor area and this normally alleviates over a few weeks. Swelling at the forehead and facial area is common in the first days after surgery due to injection of saline during surgery. Saline water will be slowly absorbed within the first five days.
    • Our expert surgeons at Bangkok Hair Clinic will provide you with a guidance booklet that will give you a clear instruction of what to do and look for in the days following transplant surgery and we are always available to hear your concerns.

What is the process of hair growth after transplantation?

Within 24 hours, small crusts begin to form on each graft that is shed between 4-14 days after the procedure. The grafted hairs are firmly implanted within these first 2 weeks and will begin to shed its shaft (the hair strand) at one month. The grafted hairs will begin to grow at 10-16 weeks after the procedure and will continue to grow for most, if not all, of your life.

What is the difference between standard FUE and DHI?

The main difference is the device used for the implantation of grafts during FUE hair transplantation.

The implantation phase of FUE hair transplants can be done using metal forceps (standard FUE) or implanters (DHI). Whilst metal forceps is the popular choice to implant follicular grafts around the world, 'Implanters' are a novel device developed to reduce the amount of mechanical trauma grafts may receive during the process.  This has been shown to significantly improving graft survival, reduce operative time, and produce denser results.
