    FAQs

    What causes hair loss?

    • Androgenic Alopecia (AGA): The most common cause of hair loss world wide influenced by genetics and environmental factors. Although often referred to as "Male-pattern baldness", AGA can occur in men and women between the ages of 25 to 65 years old.
    • Hormonal Factors: Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) can shrink hair follicles, leading to thinner, weaker hair before eventually being lost through the process of miniaturisation.
    • Pattern of Progression: AGA usually starts at the hairline and crown and progresses without treatment.
    • Other Causes:
      • Stress or trauma
      • Smoking cigarettes
      • Hormonal imbalances (e.g., PCOS or thyroid conditions)
      • Medical conditions like alopecia areata or SLE
      • Nutritional deficiencies (e.g., iron, zinc, vitamin D)
      • Side effects of medications (e.g., chemotherapy)

Understanding the cause is essential for choosing effective treatment.

    How does hairline design work?

We design your desired hairline by combining your preferences with our expertise in facial aesthetics. Whether you prefer a conservative hairline that reflects a natural, subtle receding pattern or wish to restore the appearance of your hairline from your 20s, our surgeons specialize in creating natural, personalized results tailored to each patient’s age, ethnicity, facial structure, and individual goals.

Note that each patient’s case has unique limitations. It's important to discuss expectations and ideas with our surgeons to develop a plan that balances aesthetic goals with what is medically and anatomically achievable.

Is it normal to lose hair daily while showering or combing?

It is normal to lose about 50–100 hairs per day as part of the hair’s natural growth cycle. The average scalp contains over 100,000 hair follicles, and each follicle cycles through phases of growth, rest, and shedding. Most hairs shed during the resting phase (telogen) will naturally regrow within a few months.

However, if you notice a significant increase in shedding or if your hair appears visibly thinner over time, this could indicate an underlying issue such as Androgenic Alopecia (AGA), stress-related hair loss, nutritional deficiencies, or other conditions. Seeking professional evaluation can help determine the cause and provide appropriate treatment options. At Bangkok Hair Clinic, we can assess your hair health and recommend personalized solutions to address any concerns.

Hair grafts used in transplantation also follow the natural growth cycle, ensuring a seamless and lasting integration with existing hair.

What is the difference between FUT and FUE hair transplant methods?

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) are two popular techniques for harvesting hair grafts in hair transplantation surgery.

    • FUT (Strip Surgery): This traditional method involves removing a strip of hair-bearing scalp skin from the donor area (typically the back of the head). The strip is then dissected under a microscope to extract hair follicles for transplantation. The donor site is sutured back together, leaving a fine, horizontal scar that is usually discreet.
    • FUE: This advanced technique involves extracting individual hair follicles directly from the donor area using small punches. It leaves tiny circular scars that are less noticeable and requires no sutures.

Both methods are effective for hair restoration, but the best option depends on your specific needs and preferences. At Bangkok Hair Clinic, our experts will recommend the most suitable technique based on your unique circumstances.

What is an Implanter pen in hair transplantation?

An Implanter pen is a specialized surgical instrument used in the implantation phase of hair transplantation. It is designed to precisely place hair grafts into the recipient area after they have been harvested from the donor site. The grafts are gently inserted into the tip of the Implanter pen, which is then used to directly implant the hair follicles into the scalp. This technique is sometimes referred to as Direct Hair Implantation (DHI).

The Implanter pen offers several advantages over standard hair transplant methods. In traditional Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), metal forceps are used during implantation, which can cause additional trauma to the grafts. By reducing this mechanical trauma, the Implanter pen can improve graft survival rates by 10-15%, leading to denser and more natural-looking results. At Bangkok Hair Clinic, we use high-quality Implanter pens imported directly from Korea (Lion Implanter) to enhance the overall success of the procedure.

What is Direct Hair Implantation (DHI)?

Direct Hair Implantation (DHI) is a technique that uses Implanter pens during the Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) procedure. This method involves extracting individual hair follicles from the donor area and directly implanting them into the recipient area with the Implanter pen, minimizing mechanical trauma to the grafts.

The advantage of DHI is that it improves graft survival rates, leading to a denser and more natural hairline. The reduced handling of the grafts also results in quicker recovery compared to traditional FUE. This technique is particularly effective for precise and detailed hairlines

How do we maximise the results of hair transplant?

    1. Minimizing Out-of-Body Time: The duration that hair grafts spend outside the body is crucial for their survival. At Bangkok Hair Clinic, we use the ‘First out, First in’ technique, which ensures that the first grafts removed from the donor area are implanted first. This reduces the out-of-body time, improving graft survival
    2. Specialized Graft Holding Solution: Our clinic uses an advanced graft holding solution designed to preserve graft viability. This solution, which is also used in organ transplantation, ensures that the grafts remain nourished and healthy during the procedure, further enhancing their success
    3. Temperature Control: Maintaining optimal temperature of 2-4 degrees Celcius during the procedure has been shown to improve graft survival. We carefully control the temperature of the graft holding solution to ensure that the follicles remain in the best condition, reducing the risk of damage and improving the overall outcome
    4. Precision in Graft Placement: Using specialized tools, like Implanter pens, we reduce trauma to the grafts during implantation. This minimizes damage and improves the precision of graft placement, contributing to a denser, more natural-looking hairline

Are you a good candidate for hair transplant surgery?

Most men and women with good overall health are suitable candidates for hair transplant surgery. At Bangkok Hair Clinic, we offer free consultation sessions to assess your hair loss pattern and determine whether a hair transplant is right for you. During the consultation, our specialists will evaluate several key factors:

    • Degree of Hair Loss: We assess how much hair you have lost and whether the remaining hair is suitable for transplanting.
    • Hair Type and Texture: Your hair’s density, thickness, and texture play a role in determining the success of the transplant.
    • Donor Area Quality: We examine the density and health of your donor area (typically the back of the head) to ensure that enough healthy hair follicles are available for transplantation.
    • Scalp Conditions: Scalp laxity and overall health of your skin are important to assess the feasibility of surgery.

At the consultation, we will help you visualize your new natural hairline and discuss realistic expectations. Our goal is to ensure that you have a clear understanding of the process and what the results will look like

Can you design your own hairline?

At Bangkok Hair Clinic, our surgeons specialize in creating natural-looking hairlines based on factors like age, race, and gender. We work with you to design a hairline that meets your aesthetic preferences, while ensuring it suits your overall appearance. During your consultation, we’ll discuss your goals and make sure the design is realistic and appropriate for your hair restoration needs

    Is hair transplantation painful?

Hair transplantation is generally not painful, as modern techniques use local anesthesia to numb the donor and recipient areas. At Bangkok Hair Clinic, our surgeons use a carefully controlled method of administering anesthesia slowly, ensuring patient comfort throughout the procedure.

While some mild discomfort may be felt during the injection of anesthesia, the surgery itself is usually pain-free. After the procedure, patients may experience some swelling or tenderness, but this typically resolves quickly with proper care. We aim to make the entire experience as comfortable as possible, ensuring that hair transplantation is a positive, life-changing process.

What is the density of your implanted hairs?

The density of transplanted hair refers to the number of hair follicles per square centimeter. On average, hair restoration surgeons aim for a density of 40-50 follicles per square centimeter, which is considered sufficient for a natural, aesthetically pleasing appearance. In areas with existing hair (such as the mid scalp or crown), density can be customized based on the patient’s unique characteristics and desired outcome.

The volume of hair, however, is influenced by multiple factors including the thickness, length, and texture of the hair, as well as how the hair is styled. The density will also depend on the donor area’s quality and the size of the area being transplanted. Generally, hair at the back of your head tends to be thicker than the hair at the front, which helps improve overall volume and natural appearance.

How long do transplanted hairs last?

Transplanted hair follicles are typically permanent because they are harvested from the "permanent zone" at the back and sides of the scalp. Hair in these areas is resistant to the hormone Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which causes hair loss in other parts of the scalp. These "donor" follicles retain their DHT resistance even after transplantation, allowing them to continue growing in the recipient area.

This principle is known as "donor dominance", meaning transplanted follicles behave as they would in their original location. While this is a well-established concept in hair restoration, it’s important to note that individual results may vary due to factors such as age, health, and overall hair loss progression.

In some cases, transplanted hairs may continue to grow for many years, but surrounding hair can still be affected by DHT, potentially leading to further hair loss. Therefore, ongoing hair loss treatment may be recommended to maintain overall results

Can someone donate his/her hair for you?

No, hair transplantation can only be performed using a patient’s own hair. This is because hair follicles are genetically programmed to be compatible only with the individual's body. Using hair from a donor (another person) would lead to rejection, similar to organ transplants.
Body hair transplant (BHT) is an alternative in some cases, where hair from other parts of the body, like the chest or beard, is used for transplantation when scalp hair is insufficient.

Are there any scars in hair transplantation surgery?

The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) clearly states that there is no such thing as scarless surgery in this field.

While FUE (Follicular Unit Excision) hair transplant leaves small, pin-point scars at the donor site, they are typically tiny and less noticeable compared to other techniques like FUT.
Additionally, the scars can be easily concealed by adjusting the hair length in the donor area, allowing patients to keep their hair at a normal length without visible scarring. With proper care and following post-operative instructions, these scars often fade significantly over time

Will you need a second hair transplantation surgery?

Whether a second procedure is needed depends on factors like the degree of hair loss and the density of the donor area. During a single procedure, we can typically transplant 3,000-3,500 follicular units, but the exact number depends on the patient’s scalp condition and tolerance for surgery.

If a larger number of grafts is required, a second procedure may be recommended to allow the donor area to recover and replenish. This is usually done about 10-12 months after the first procedure to ensure optimal results. Your surgeon at Bangkok Hair Clinic will assess your individual needs and determine if multiple procedures are necessary

What are the complications of hair transplant surgery?

While hair transplant surgery is generally safe, there are potential complications to consider:

    1. Infection: As with any surgery, there is a risk of infection at the donor or recipient sites. Proper aftercare and following the surgeon's instructions can help reduce this risk.
    2. Scarring: In FUE, small circular scars are left in the donor area, and in FUT, a linear scar is created. Both types of scars are usually discreet but may be more noticeable with shorter hair.
    3. Swelling and Bruising: Swelling, particularly around the forehead, is common after the procedure and typically resolves within a few days.
    4. Shock Loss: Temporary shedding of hair, known as shock loss, may occur in both the transplanted area and surrounding natural hair. This is usually temporary and resolves as new hair grows.
    5. Numbness or Sensitivity: Some patients experience temporary numbness or sensitivity in the treated areas due to nerve irritation.
    6. Unnatural Appearance: If grafts are placed improperly or in excessive amounts, the result may look unnatural. Working with an experienced surgeon helps avoid this issue.

What is the process of hair growth after transplantation?

The process of hair growth after a transplant follows these stages:

    1. Shedding (Weeks 1-3): Transplanted hairs often shed within the first few weeks, which is a normal part of the process known as "shock loss." This doesn’t mean the transplant failed.
    2. Resting Phase (1-3 months): No visible growth occurs as the transplanted follicles rest and adjust to their new location.
    3. New Growth (3-6 months): Around 3 months, new hair begins to grow. Initially, this hair may be fine or thin, but it thickens gradually.
    4. Full Growth (6-12 months): By 12 months, the transplanted hair reaches its final thickness and density, blending seamlessly with the natural hair.

Throughout the process, following proper aftercare is crucial for optimal results. Full results are typically seen by 12 months, though this can vary from person to person

What is the difference between standard FUE and DHI?

The primary difference between standard FUE (Follicular Unit Excision) and DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) lies in the device used during the implantation phase.

    • Standard FUE: In standard FUE, the harvested hair grafts are implanted using metal forceps. While this is the most common method globally, the forceps can cause slight mechanical trauma to the grafts during insertion, potentially affecting graft survival and overall results.
    • DHI (Direct Hair Implantation): DHI uses Implanter pens, which are designed to reduce the mechanical trauma to grafts. This allows the surgeon to directly implant the grafts into the scalp with greater precision and less damage. As a result, DHI has been shown to improve graft survival, reduce operative time, and achieve denser, more natural results

DHI is considered a refinement of FUE due to its advanced tools and techniques, offering a more controlled and less invasive implantation process.

    What is the recovery time?

Recovery generally takes about 2 weeks, with most patients able to return to normal activities within a few days. However, strenuous exercise should be avoided for about two weeks to ensure optimal healing. We provide all patients with extensive post-operative care instructions.

Will my transplanted hair look natural?

With modern techniques, the results are usually very natural, as the grafts are placed to match the natural growth pattern of your hair. This is one of the primary goals during the procedure
